Bursting into the heart of summer, Denver’s favorite hot dog-eating maestro, HEYZ, serves up a healthy dose of unhinged wittiness with his latest “HEYZ’D and Confused EP.” Balancing offbeat charm and knockout bass lines, this four-track EP captures the imagination of young concertgoers searching for a damn good time. Returning to Bassrush after his Lost In The HEYZ EP, this new EP drops the same day as his 30-state Headlining Tour of the same name.

Known for his viral internet presence and quirky attitude, HEYZ explains the upcoming release like this: “‘HEYZ’D And Confused’ is exactly how I feel 90 percent of the time. It’s my favorite kind of chaos; fun, unpredictable, a little unhinged, but it still hits you right in the soul.” Coming off a massive set at this year’s Deadrocks, HEYZ continues the momentum with this new EP. Set against the backdrop of Fear and Loathing-esque graphics, this good doctor is sure to advocate a healthy dose of weird wobbles and gnarly bass lines to fill your fix.

HEYZ and Confused

Beginning with its titular track “HEYZ’D and Confused,” a foreboding conversation unfolds between a psych ward patient and a medical doctor. Discussing the possibilities of going psychotic, haunting pianos creep into this cinematic build-up as the track begins to take flight. Garglely warped bass lines ravage through the piano melodies, layering this mad soundscape perfectly. Dissolving into the first interlude, low-end bass lines emerge as the eerie medical jargon creeps in once more. “Bom, bom, bom ,bom “ Spacey pianos signal the final drop as the warped bass lines beat into your chest, taking your breath away during the remaining seconds of the song.

Ripping the mic out of your hands and making his presence known from the minute the track starts, Dubbygotbars leads the charge on “Onomono.” Driven by his sharp, poignant lyrics, this hip-hop-soaked track continues the theme of unhinged sinisterness. The tea kettles scream on the stove as the pressure is cooked, a massive croaking-like noise shakes between the wrapped bass lines and whimsical synth parts. Gritty bars pierce the track just before those croaking noises rattle you to a jarring ending.

No sympathy for the devil

“If I were the devil,” the opening lyrics spark curiosity as a Three 6 Mafia-esque cadence blasts through the speakers. Built on street-heavy lyrics and mystical undertones, this ragga-driven dubstep banger introduces a different hip-hop vibe. Simply titled “Demons,” this track is incredibly groove-driven, making you bob your head and throw up your set. Distorted low-end frequencies guide you through the sound as you clutch your seatbelt. Stank face undeniably takes hold of your facial features during the final portions of this hood-soaked banger.

Showcasing his softer side, HEYZ brings this unsettling journey to a delicate ending with “Fantasy.” Anchored by airy female vocals drifting in and out of melodic textures and ominous bass builds, the melodic wonderland slowly turn weird. Around the first minute mark, it switches gears, diving headfirst into modulated wobbles and warped bass lines. Like a spaceship crashing to earth, the airy vocals serve as the guiding light of hope during this strange and terrible saga known as HEYZ’D and Confused sadly comes to an end.
