Modestep returns July 4th with “Hang My Heart” — one of the most emotional and euphoric moments on his highly-anticipated upcoming album Give Up The Ghost. Fusing indie dance sensibilities with cinematic drum & bass and breakbeat energy, the track showcases a more vulnerable side of Modestep’s sound: melodic, heartfelt, and made for losing yourself in the music.
Centered around the hook “Hang my heart in the cloakroom,” the song paints a vivid picture of
London nightlife — a night out as emotional release, where you leave your worries behind and embrace the moment. Smooth vocal-led verses build into sweeping choruses, before launching into cathartic DnB-driven drops filled with shimmering synths, swirling textures, and propulsive rhythm. The contrast between the intimate songwriting and the expansive production creates an immersive, deeply resonant listening experience.
“‘Hang My Heart’ is a story that I’m sure most of us from this city can relate to,” says Modestep’s Josh Friend. “It’s about heading out for a night in London, waiting for that moment at the end of your week where nothing matters, and everyone’s on the same wave. Leave everything — including your worries — in the cloakroom, and dance like nothing else matters.”
The single continues to build toward Give Up The Ghost — Modestep’s first full-length album in over a decade. With its emotional highs, powerful production, and future-facing themes, the project explores what it means to be human in an age of artificial creativity, while pushing the boundaries of live instrumentation and electronic music.
