Toronto-based producer and rhythm consigliere Ricky Bamboo returns with his third release on Zeds Dead’s Altered States imprint. Dropping the two-track EP “Extrasensory,” this downtempo journey down the rabbit hole is packed with warped basslines, organic textures, and that signature dub style influence. Known for his hypnotic soundscape that transports the listener to another realm, this naturalistic conquest is perfectly set for the forest floor.
With a storied background in the Tronotos rave scene, this early jungle and drum and bass DJ has gradually evolved into the downtempo maestro known as Ricky Bamboo. By opening for prominent artists such as Diplo, M.I.A., and DJ Kush, his transformation into Ricky Bamboo signifies the pinnacle of his sonic development. His third release on Altered States, “Extrasensory,” explores the inner crevices of the mind and the delicate textures of the mycelium overgrowth.

Sensory Overload
The title track, “Extrasensory,” begins with a scientist discussing the powers of mushrooms and how they can unlock extrasensory perception. The song kicks off with a spacey dub, featuring long, drawn-out wubs that glide across the background. This is complemented by a primal vocal track, adding layers to this naturalistic track. Drifting through the trees on a warm summer night, this opening track screams Afters in Sherwood Forest. Effortlessly guiding the listener on its journey while simultaneously educating them about the powers of mushrooms, this piece is an instant downtempo be-wonderment.
The second track, “Mission Control,” conjures a mysterious energy with cosmic undertones. Deep, resonant bass lines stimulate your mind and shake your soul. This track showcases space bass at its finest, woven with foreboding tones. Then, unexpectedly, around the midpoint, the atmosphere shifts dramatically. Middle Eastern sitar melodies emerge, imparting a fresh feel to this closing piece. Retaining those rich wubs, the latter part of the song is as distinctive as the entire project. Glimmering until the last moments, Extrasensory is the downtempo journey you never knew you needed.
