The festivals may be on hold but one thing is certain – artists are making big moves without them. In most cases, clout is part of the application for releasing new music on a known label, but for Shizz Lo and Brainrack, the talent was the driving force for their new track “You Know”. Still fresh from the release on September 28, “You Know” is bringing in the streams by the tens of thousands on Spotify alone.
Shizz Lo’s career hit the launch pad not so long ago, touring internationally with Bok Nero, performances at Moonrise Festival, and across the entire US as a headliner. He teamed up with Bok Nero for their song “Hood Anthem”, released on Steve Aoki’s label, Dim Mak. As far as other DJs stamp of approval and support, 12th Planet, Carnage, Ducky and Showtek are just a few on the list of heavy hitters that have played his tracks in their performances.
Shizz Lo built his identity on social media before hitting the festival stages with an Ethik Worldwide sponsorship, and most notably, his obsession with ice cream and haircuts. His Instagram stories are full of fan shoutouts and candid moments of life as they happen. His followers tag him wherever ice cream is spotted, and he shares them on his own stories with genuine enthusiasm. And his music video for “Hood Anthem”? The movie-like cherry on top.
One of the most influential bass artists in EDM, Excision, hand picked “You Know” out of hundreds of submissions to be released on his brand new label, Subsidia. Excision’s love for the bass music community and EDM as a whole sets the bar high when it comes to passion and innovation. He has an impressive resume of successful ventures like his creation of Bass Canyon and Lost Lands festivals. Just like every artist across the globe, COVID-19 cancelled events of all kinds seemingly overnight, leaving the creatives of the world to turn their energy towards other avenues. For Excision, all roads lead to creating Subsidia. Volume 1 of the “Dusk”, “Night” and “Dawn” compilations were carefully curated by Excision himself.
Fast forward to today, where a Forbes.com article shined a bright light on the creation of Subsidia and how the artists were chosen. The album “Night: Vol. 1” landed at #1 on the iTunes Electronic music charts shortly after its release. “Excision was genuinely excited about signing the song & hand picked it out of a bunch of other demos that were sent,” Shizz Lo said. “It’s truly an organic relationship with the label. Jeff is the man and I see this label becoming a powerhouse in the industry.”
There’s no question that landing on the Apple Music charts is big league. But “You Know” has been getting a lot of exposure through other DJs, including the one and only, Whipped Cream. For us fans, a trusted name in bass music has given another gift to the world. Among the start-studded talent including Wooli, Kompany and Excision himself, Shizz Lo and Brainrack’s “You Know” undoubtedly elevated their joint release to the highest ranks in EDM, joining the rosters of main-stage, prime-set-time artists. For Shizz Lo, his journey has only just begun.
