So far 2017 has shown us that a producer’s main goal is to toy with our emotions. We’ve seen vocalists incorporate lyrics that give us something to relate to and the melodies that accompany these lyrics are capable of inducing the same emotions regardless if the lyrics are there or not. BLVK SHEEP’s last release from his Mind EP, “Run” incorporates a vibrant and raw combination of vocals from Tima Dee and a surprising and very welcome riff of guitar chords from Giant Spirit, combining multiple sounds that leave us wanting more from this budding producer. The energy in this hybrid trap track is potent throughout, yet still leaves room for the emotionally laden lyrics from Tima. San Francisco born, Brooklyn-based Wingtip makes his debut on Republic Records alongside the sinewy vocals of Sophie Strauss on “Rewind.” His funky style that pairs melodic house effects with nu-disco style earned him our attention and early accolades back when he was releasing his music independently. Now, his style is highly refined and developed without losing his past works penchant for engaging instrumentals. Already clocking in over 13 million plays, “Rewind” bubbles and bumps along with an infectiously unique style that takes the sounds of 2017 and flips them on their head. Vocal stutters, guitar plucks, and rewound samples make Wingtip’s latest the most full-bodied piece of work to emerge from his studio, paving the way for a bright future for the electronic experimenter.

Italian native Yaya officially became a label owner in 2016, launching Tamango records as a realization of his “no-boundaries,” Afro-influenced musical vision. His penchant for highly rhythmic, driving beats is highly evident in 13k, a three-tracker that serves as Tamango’s debut release. The title track guides listeners gently into the rest of the EP, presenting fans with a refined and sultry tech-based groover whose subtly complex layers of percussion and muddled bass make it difficult to sit still while listening. The beauty of “13k” lies in its straight-forward arrangement, whose construction creates a heavy impact despite lacking in hugely melodic accents and notable drops. Listen to it below:

On Thursday, January 19, Donald Trump will celebrate his official inauguration as President at the All American Ball, “a toast to American culture, featuring a stellar list of special guests, plus multiple areas of entertainment and attractions, which represent the diversity, energy and promise of America.” The event will take place at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, and for a staggering $350, attendees will be able to witness performances from some of the most noteworthy names in all of music…just kidding. Owners of the music festival-priced ticket will gain exclusive access to live shows from Nashville-based Beau Davidson, performing tunes from his most recent album The American Gentleman; The Reagan Years, an ’80s tribute band that only plays songs released during the years of Ronald Reagan’s presidency (sounds insane!); with DJ sets from EDM mainstays like DJ Romin, DJ Young Rye, DJ Flow, and DJ Freedom… According to the Ball’s website, the entire event will feature “approximately” nine acts, leaving attendees on the edge of their seats to find out whether it could end up being eight or 10. “Enjoy live performances by approximately NINE fantastic acts with FOUR dance floors, plus a who’s-who of special guests, strolling entertainers and other interactive attractions throughout the magnificently appointed venue.” With such a polarizing political platform and the public condemnation coming from many sectors within the music industry, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Trump was unable to book a lineup with any recognition. Renato Ratier is wrapping up his year with a stripped down, enticing release on his home base of D-EDGE titled Minemalistic. The opener, Ratier’s original mix, presents a thumping clip with light keyboard notation and muted synths that allow for a smooth listening experience geared toward a dark, simple indoor setting.Meanwhile, Acid Mondays expand upon these ideals while adding a touch of energy to “Minemalistic,” increasing the tempo while adding further emphasis on percussion. An enhanced, groovier bassline pairs well with the subtle, eerie accents of the original, setting up their interpretation of the clip to cause even further impact on the dancefloor. Both the original “Minemalistic” and its Acid Mondays re-work arrived on digital album shelves on December 16.Prior to this release, Ratier released his second studio album, Youniverse which stiched together an immersive story across 10 tracks. D-EDGE also celebrated a momentous year as a club as well, hosting over 300 cutting-edge artists across 150 club nights.

The Major Lazer and Showtek collaborative track “Believer” is one of the singles from Major Lazer’s new, upcoming album Music Is The Weapon, but we never expected its accompanying music video to be so emotional. Enter the brand new music video of “Believer,” directed by EDM film XOXO‘s director Christopher Louie and inspired by the now-infamous photo of Omran Daqneesh covered in dust and debris after a bomb hit his home. Louie divulged the details of the video’s creation, which included much input from Diplo and Showtek-member Sjoerd Janssen and was shot on location in the Middle East, in a press release. Read his quotes below: “Like everyone in the world I was heartbroken by that image [of Omran Daqneesh], but I also saw a glimmer of hope. As dark as the subject matter is, the point of our “Believer” video was to capture the resilience of youth and the hope displayed by communities coming together to save victims from the rubble. If it wasn’t for the support from Sjoerd of Showtek and guidance from Diplo and his creative director Sara, this video would not have turned out as emotionally powerful as it has. There were countless obstacles that go along with shooting in an unfamiliar country but with the help of the local film community we got through them all and created something special in the process.” Watch the “Believer” music video below: Image via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM.
