Eminem made a comeback today by dropping his first track since 2015! Oh yeah, and it casually features Beyoncé! The Detroit rapper delivers a raw, stripped back performance in “Walk On Water” as Queen Bey slays some seriously angelic vocals that soften Em’s rough edges. The production is minimal, featuring only subtle chords to accompany his bars and “Stan” like frantic writing and paper rustling suggesting an emotional unrest. “Walk On Water” outlines Eminem’s current struggle with the constant need to deliver as his iconic career winds down. “The crowd is gone, and it’s time to wash out the blonde” he raps, but also counters that mindset with “how do I ever let this mic go without a fight.” This is the real Marshall Mathers you’re hearing. The following lyrics are perhaps Eminem’s most revealing on the pressure: “Now take your best rhyme, out do it, now do it a thousand times / Now let ’em tell ya the world no longer cares or gives a fuck about your rhymes.” He finishes off the track with a phrase that pushes out all self doubt and holds the equivalency of a dropped mic: “Bitch, I wrote ‘Stan!’” As if we needed any more proof, Eminem is a damn legend.
