Majestic Casual stands as one of electronic music’s most respected brands and curators in the age of the Internet. Although predominantly known for their YouTube presence, the brand has evolved into a full-fledged record label with he newest budding talent to arise from their imprint being Vancouver’s On Planets.
The Canadian beat-smith caught the attention of Majestic Casual after releasing downtempo remixes of Gallant and Jack Ü, and the electronic music curator stepped forward to release his debut EP. Titled Personal Space, On Planets packages four singles that each hold their own unique temperament.
The lead track, “First Tour,” begins with a slow crescendo of airy synths and lofty vocals before On Planets fires a spastic eruption of glitchy synths and thunderous drums, providing a sharp, calculated contrast. “Cure” is a peppy, future bass-driven track that holds the same spasmodic tendency as the last breakdown of “First Tour” but from start to finish. “Too Bad / So Sad” serves as the dark cut of the pack. Guided by ominous, angsty vocals, On Planets continues to showcase his adroitness at constructing organized chaos through his drum patterns.
Finally, “Chapter” rounds out the EP with the only feature, Lucas Fogale, steering listeners through the Canadian producer’s ebbs and flows through a bright sonic landscape. Overall, On Planets shines in the indie-electronic sphere with his debut offering and creates a full body of work that is unified mosaic of what his sound as an artist is at the current moment.
