BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix series is esteemed not only for the quality of acts that Pete Tong and his camp recruit, but also for the variety it attracts. While Pan-Pot and Adriatique offered phenomenal techno sets for the final broadcast of January and first of February, the Essential Mix has shifted gears this weekend. For the February 11 installation, Bristol-based duo My Nu Leng stepped behind the decks to provide two hours of high octane, bass-driven music.

The pair’s primary focuses in the mix are centered around bass house, breakbeat, and DnB. Playing selections from Animal Youth, Redlight, and their own catalogue, My Nu Leng disrupt the series’ more entrancing direction of recent weeks. That is not to say, however, that this weekend’s broadcast is not without its melodic moments. As any successful Essential Mix purveyors are wont to do, My Nu leng ensure to maintain a dynamic set trajectory, balancing their heavier tendencies with smooth interludes.
