Considering how much Mat Zo has evolved and accomplished as an artist, it’s easy to forget that the producer is only 27 years old. Over the course of his two studio albums, 2013’s Damage Control and 2016’s Self Assemble, the Mad Zoo label-head has developed his sound across a variety of stylistic avenues which diverge from his nascent sound.
For his newest output, the producer revisits the classic trance which influenced his early days through a bootleg of British producer JX’s 1994 track, “Son Of A Gun.” Though Mat Zo was only four years old when the original track was released, his revision shows an acute knowledge and mastery of the classic rave elements which pervaded JX’s heyday.
Through reconfiguring the original vocal samples and editing its retro synth pads, Mat Zo succeeds in creating an homage that is modern, but also authentic the trance tropes of the ’90s.
