We caught up with Las Vegas based DJ and Producer Cam Colston to chat about his career and find out a little bit about himself.
Hi Cam, how are you and what’s going on in your world at the moment?
I’m doing fantastic, thank you for asking. At the moment I am preparing for the busy year ahead – finishing up a lot of original tracks and remixes to share with the world!
Where are you currently based?
Las Vegas, NV
How would you describe your sound?
In one word? Multifaceted. It’s important for me to constantly keep things fresh and experiment with as many genres and sounds as possible. I enjoy working on everything from Vocal Trance to Hip-Hop, Progressive House, or even commercial jingles. I often don’t know what I’m going to be producing until I’ve already started working!
Who were your influences growing up?
Yikes, where to begin? Musically it was as widespread and diverse as it is now, although at the time it wasn’t the largest factor in my life. My parents were very influential because they gave me a great education and always encouraged me to be who I wanted and to set my own goals in life.
How did you get involved in the Dance music business?
I, like many others, dabbled in production before I had any idea what I was doing. (Spoiler alert: Those early results weren’t great!). But I became absolutely fascinated with it and stuck with it, eventually producing better music, securing some releases, and landing a few gigs around town here in Vegas.
Where would you like to see yourself in the months ahead?
Ideally, landing a spot on a lineup at a festival would be amazing. Other than that I’ll be very excited to be releasing a lot of the new music I’ve recently finished up!
Which is your ultimate career dream?
I think we all have that dream of performing on a main stage at a major festival, but just as incredible to me would be performing a set at Ushuaïa Ibiza.
What’s been your career highlight so far?
Being invited to do a guest mix for Club 985 After Hours on 98.5 KLUC Las Vegas was an absolute honour.
Who’s inspiring you in 2016?
Anyone who isn’t afraid to go out and chase their dreams. I draw inspiration from anybody brave enough to risk it all for whatever it is they’re passionate about.
If you could choose, who would you like to collaborate with?
As far as producers go, I would love to get in the studio with Don Diablo one day. When it comes to vocalists I’d probably say Chris Martin. Coldplay has provided a large part of the soundtrack to my life and it would be fascinating to be able to work with someone of that stature.
Tell us something not many people know about Cam Colston?
I have an insatiable desire to learn, and it almost doesn’t matter what the subject matter is. When you combine that with the information age, it’s a recipe for a self taught individual. Whether it’s music production, DJing, dancing, musical instruments, or even magic (yes, I was a magician for a few years!), I pride myself on putting in the time to learn as much as I can in life.
Anything to add/shout outs?
There’s so many people to thank for where I’m at right now on this journey, but I’d love to give a shout out to the Sound Bite Productions team out here in Vegas. Being able to DJ and produce music full-time wouldn’t be possible for me without them, and I’m very proud to be a part of such a great team!
