Coachella’s 2017 installment sold out in three hours this weekend, after the festival’s official lineup was finally revealed in full. The 125,000-capacity ticket pool sold all of its $399 passes, according to LA Weekly, for both the first and second weekend. Even though the sell-out time still comes at about 80 minutes longer than it did in 2015, when Drake, Jack White and AC/DC headlined, the rate still comes as a clear indicator of the kind of reach the southern California festival has on the music sphere. Adding in the expanded Coachella grounds and bump to 125,000-person capacity for both it and Stagecoach to follow, it makes sense as to why this year’s sell-out time “took so long.” 2017’s lineup is curiously devoid of any real huge surprises, with the exception of Hans Zimmer. The past three years were notable for their reunions and large headlining names, like Outkast, Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC and Drake. Despite Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar and Radiohead being a fantastic group of headliners, the kind of epic and life-changing array of legendary acts is a bit lacking compared to previous years as we move into 2017. Of course, with an immediate sell-out comes immediate reselling on third-party websites. Many Coachella passes have already been put up for sale by scalpers, with some charging well into the hundreds for the tickets. As of today, LA Weekly reports that a pair of GA tickets can be found online for around $619, with Weekend 2 passes being sold for even less. As LA Weekly mentions, however, if a measly $600 festival ticket makes you raise your eyebrows, remember that tickets to see Outkast’s headlining performance in 2014 were sold at an average of $1434.91.
